Leisure Battery Care: Charging, Maintainers and Going Lithium

A decent leisure battery should give you five years or more of touring. Most are dead inside three — and it's rarely the battery's fault. Lead-acid batteries don't so much wear out as get killed: left flat over winter, chronically undercharged on the road, or cooked by a cheap charger. Looking after one properly is neither difficult nor expensive, and if you've been eyeing up lithium, we'll help you work out whether the upgrade actually makes sense for how you tour.

Here's how we'd care for a leisure battery through the year — and the kit we'd fit to make it effortless.

1 Know your numbers

What the voltage is telling you

Everything in battery care starts with one habit: checking the resting voltage. Measured after the battery has sat for a few hours with the charger off and no loads running, it's a surprisingly accurate fuel gauge. Around 12.7V or higher means full. 12.4V means roughly half — and for lead-acid, that's your signal to recharge now, not at the end of the trip. By 12.0V the battery is effectively flat, and every day it sits like that does permanent damage.

Why does the 50% rule matter so much? Because depth of discharge sets a lead-acid battery's lifespan: a typical AGM leisure battery gives around 500 charge cycles when discharged to 50% each time, and far fewer if you routinely run it flat. The real killer is sulphation — leave a battery standing discharged and a hard white deposit forms on the plates that no amount of charging will fully reverse.

2 Charging

Charge it properly, not just occasionally

After sulphation, the next biggest battery killer is bad charging. A cheap fixed-voltage charger either never quite fills the battery or sits there gently cooking it. A proper smart charger works through distinct stages — bulk, absorption, then float — and holds the absorption voltage at the right level for your battery type. For AGM that's typically no more than 14.4V (check your battery maker's figure). Once the battery is full, a good charger drops to a low storage voltage that holds it at 100% indefinitely without gassing, which means you can safely leave it connected for weeks at a time.

3 Storage

Laying up: maintainers and isolators

Batteries lose charge just sitting there — and in a stored van, the alarm, tracker and clock keep sipping power on top. Left alone over a British winter, that combination will pull a healthy battery down into sulphation territory within weeks. The answer has two parts: cut the drains you can, and top up what's left. If your storage spot has mains, leave a smart charger connected in storage mode. If it doesn't, a compact solar maintainer will quietly do the same job from daylight alone.

Fitted alarm or tracker? Don't isolate the battery completely — your insurer will expect those to stay live. Keep them powered and use a maintainer to cover the drain instead.

4 On the road

Why your battery never seems full on tour

If your leisure battery arrives on site at 80% no matter how far you've driven, your tow car or base vehicle is probably the reason. Modern 'smart' alternators on Euro 6 vehicles vary their output constantly to save fuel, and much of the time the voltage is simply too low to push a leisure battery to full through a traditional split-charge feed. The fix is a DC-DC (battery-to-battery) charger: it takes whatever the alternator provides and converts it into a proper multi-stage charge at the correct voltage — and it's the right way to charge a lithium battery from the engine too.

5 Going lithium

Is it time to go lithium?

Lithium (LiFePO4) leisure batteries have gone from exotic to mainstream, and the case for them is real. They weigh roughly half as much as an equivalent lead-acid battery — a serious win for caravan noseweight and motorhome payload. You can use 80% or more of the rated capacity instead of lead-acid's 50%, so a 100Ah lithium behaves like a much bigger battery. They accept charge faster, need no maintenance, and are rated for thousands of cycles rather than hundreds. If you tour off-grid, run an inverter, or are simply tired of replacing batteries every few years, the higher upfront cost usually works out cheaper per trip.

Before you swap: three things lithium needs

First, a charger with a genuine lithium profile — LiFePO4 charges at around 14.2–14.6V and doesn't want lead-acid float and equalise routines. Second, low-temperature protection: lithium must not be charged below 0°C, so choose a battery whose BMS blocks sub-zero charging (or a heated model) if it lives in an outside locker. Third, check the whole charging chain — the van's onboard mains charger and any engine charging need lithium settings too.
